Review: I was not expected to like this book, nor was I expecting it to surprise me like it did.
The premise of this novel was one that I’ve seen before, so before I started reading I made my guess as to what was going to happen. And while I was mostly right, I was where I was wrong. Two thirds of the way through the novel, there’s a twist that I figured would happen. But how the novel ended was something different entirely.
What I liked about this book was the characters. They’re all flawed, they all make mistakes. Claire made judgement errors all over. Kat and Jesse’s plot was wild. Honestly, though, Claire was my favorite character, and not just because she is the main voice. The journey she takes to find out the truth as to what had happened to Kat and Jesse was one that I felt fit. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. But did it fit the character to be making questionable decisions left and right? Correct.
My only real detractor from this book was that I felt some of the choices the author made in the last third of the book didn’t hold up to the rest of the writing. No spoilers here, but there’s a reveal in the final few chapters that just doesn’t work for me, and it took me out of the book for a good few minutes.
Any fans of mysteries and thrillers will probably get a good read out of this.
