The “How Well Do I Know My Books” Challenge – Blogtober!

Hello all! I am feeling much better today, so I decided to do another book challenge. This one is a little different. The challenge is to pick random books using a random number generator/friends to decided what shelf and book you are to do. Then, answer the question without cheating.

Since I’m doing this text based, I’ve copied down the questions first, but I’m going to use three random number generators to pick the shelves and books, and then the question, to make it fair since I’m reading the questions ahead of time (something I try not to do). Expect a lot of me going “I don’t know” as I ended up with some books that I just don’t know.

Oh, and for fairness, I will not be including my manga shelf, as there are nearly 100 volumes just on that one shelf, unlike the average 30 my other shelves hold (I have to double park several of my shelves).

Without any further ado, let’s go!

  1. Without looking at the description, tell us what the book is about! I got I’m Not Dying With You Tonight by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal. So, the description I should give is that it’s the story of two teen girls, one black and one white, who have to survive together to get across their city while it is in the middle of a violent race riot and filled with civil unrest. What I want to say is more… rude. It’s the story of two dumbass teens who make every stupid mistake while trying to head home during a race riot. The do things such as leave their first safe place, separate from groups that could have protected them, and made single-minded decisions that put both them and others in danger. The only redeemable character ends up ARRESTED and is going to court in the bonus chapter included in the B&NYA Book Club edition. Yeah… I really didn’t like this book. (Neither did anyone in my book club, if anyone is curious.)
  2. Without looking it up, what is the genre of this book? I ended up with The Library of Lost Things by Laura Taylor Namey. I guessed YA Contemporary, and I was right! This one is pretty cute. I really need to sit down and reread it in one sitting.
  3. Without looking at the book, tell us what is on the cover! I got Keeper of the Lost Cities: Nightfall by Shannon Messenger. I remembered that there were three characters on the cover (two girls and a boy) but not much else. I only remembered because I just shelved it the other day. Haven’t finished book one yet, but it’s another on my list. (I read middle grade for my cousins to make sure it’s appropriate for them. Family has certain things they don’t want the 11 year old to read yet, or the 6 year old to see. I don’t mind. It’s a fun task.)
  4. Without looking it up, what is the main character’s name? I ended up with Star Wars: Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice by Karen Traviss. It features an ensemble cast including Luke and Mara Jade Skywalker, Han and Leia Solo, Jacen and Jaina Solo, and Ben Skywalker, among other characters. And curse Disney because it’s not longer considered canon.
  5. Without looking, name a side character! I got Supernova by Marissa Meyer. Honesty time, I haven’t read the first book in the series (Renegades) since it’s release day. I have all three and just haven’t read them. I don’t remember any characters, let alone side ones. I really gotta fix that one of these days.
  6. Guess how many pages the book has without looking! (If you guess 25 below or 25 above the number, you can count it as a win!) I got Tales of the Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong, which is a short story collection. I guessed 425 pages, and it was 474. So close, but off by a bit. It’s been like six years since I read that series, hush.
  7. Without looking it up, what rating did you give this book? (If you land on a book you haven’t read, pick a new set of numbers.) I landed on The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I gave it 5 stars. I didn’t even need to look that one up. I loved this book so much. It’s so relevant and important and should absolutely be taught to all students in middle/high school. (The movie’s not half bad either.)
  8. Without looking, where does this book take place? I ended up with the B&NYA Book Club edition of Most Likely by Sarah Watson. I guessed Washington DC, and I was right. Not bad for not finishing this one. I was enjoying it, but when everything went down and I left my job, I lost my will to read it. I plan on blasting through it next month or so.
  9. Without looking, what are the parent’s names? I did not plan this one. I got Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry’s parents are Lily and James Potter. (You can make an argument for Molly and Arthur Weasley). This is what happens when you have two copies of the same book series on the same book shelf. Incidentally, I got Mom’s copy. Which I don’t know why it’s on my shelf. Whoops.
  10. Without looking at the hardback, what color is the book under the dust jacket? (If paperback, pick a new set of numbers.) I ended up with the Owlcrate edition of Roseblood by A.G. Howard. I guess that the color would be red, and I was absolutely correct. I can’t read this edition, and I haven’t picked up another copy to get through. The color of the text like a mauve, and my eyes ache in like three seconds.
  11. Without looking, is there anything on the hardback? Like an imprint or an image of some sort? I got the Owlcrate edition of Heartless by Marissa Meyer. I thought the hardback was covered in rose bush vines, and I was right. I just missed the buds of roses. I blasted through this book back when I first got it! I enjoyed it until like the second to the last chapter. Jest didn’t deserve it.
  12. Whiteout taking the dust jacket off, what is the color of the font on the hardback? I got Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin. I guessed that the hardcover was yellow/gold, and I was right! I blasted through this one for Barnes and Noble’s YA Book Club. I haven’t read the sequel yet, and I may hold off until the third book is closer. The wait for Blood and Honey nearly killed me as it is.
  13. Without looking, do the chapters have titles or are they just numbered? I got Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser. I figured the chapters were just numbered, and I ended up being right. I think this was an Uppercase book pick, because it is signed, but I don’t really remember it. Whoops. The cover is pretty though.
  14. Without looking at the back cover does it have an award on it? I ended up with Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone. I guessed it didn’t have an award on the back, and I was right. I also have the first printing of the book, which I’m not surprised. I absolutely loved this book. Please give it a read.
  15. Without looking, does this book have any author blurbs on the front cover? I pulled Now is Everything by Amy Giles. I guessed that there wasn’t any, and I was wrong. There’s a small blurb by Amber Smith. Another book that I started and never finished. I think I read 20 pages and my break ended. Gonna have to come back to this one, it looks pretty good!
  16. Without looking, does the book have a description on the back? I ended up with The Shadow Hour by Melissa Gray. I guessed there was a description on the back, and I was right. I haven’t read this one, nor the first book in the series. I don’t even know when I bought them…
  17. Without looking, does this book have an author photo? I got The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson off of my TBR cart. I figured there was an author photo, and I guessed right! I’ve wanted to read another Morgan Matson book since she destroyed me with Second Chance Summer. I’m holding off because I don’t think my emotions can take it.
  18. Without looking it up, is this author using a pen name? I got Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim. I guessed that it wasn’t, and I was right. (I also accidently kicked my TBR cart when I was coming back from my shelves, so now I’m gonna be limping with bandages on my foot for the rest of this. This is the halfway question.)
  19. Without peaking, what POV is this book written in? 1st or 3rd? Ok, I’m laughing at this one. I got Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, which I tossed up onto a shelf so it could count if I came across it. The POV is in 3rd person. I’m also half way through, and I hope to finish it by this weekend.
  20. Without looking, are there any pictures or graphics in this book? I ended up with The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee. I figured there wasn’t any, and I was right. I also discovered that I only finished half of this book. I remember reading the first book and liking it, but I guess the second didn’t catch me. Huh.
  21. Without looking, does it have an epilogue? I got The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James. I guessed that there was not an epilogue, and I was correct. (By the way, if you’re looking for a sci-fi Halloween read, I suggest this one. Never got the love it deserved. Creepy too.)
  22. Without looking, does this book have a prologue? I got City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare. Yes, this book does have a prologue. Every CC book does, to my knowledge. It’s also one of the CC books I haven’t read. I own just about all of them, but I never got to this one. It’s on my ever growing list.
  23. Without looking, is this book signed? I got Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills. I knew this one was signed, because it was the Uppercase copy. My other copy is the Owlcrate edition, which isn’t signed (as a bookplate) but does have a exclusive cover. And yes, I still own both.
  24. Without looking, do the page numbers have a design above or below them, or none at all? I got the Titan’s Curse by Rick Riorden. I actually know this without looking! The page numbers are bracketed, but with no other design. I happened to be flipping through The Lightning Thief for my cousin and noted that. (I have the box set with the green background and yellow gold building designs for covers).
  25. Without looking, do the chapter headers have designs on them? I got Pride by Ibi Zoboi. I thought the chapter headers were plain, and I was right. The prose is where all the amazement is located, not something so passé as the headers.
  26. Without looking, are the acknowledgements in the front or the back of the book? I got The Mark of Athena by Rick Riorden. I figured there would be something towards the end, but I didn’t see any acknowledgements in either the front or back of the book. This may be because I have the box set for the Heroes of Olympus series, and not a stand alone book.
  27. Without looking, what year was this book published? I got Bone Crier’s Moon by Kathryn Purdie, which was published in 2020. This one was kinda a bit of a cheat, because it’s an Owlcrate book, and I keep them in release order on my shelves. So I knew without a doubt that it was 2020.
  28. Without looking, what year did you read this book? I got Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. I read it on release day in 2010. That’s also when I discovered that CC struggled with writing Victorian England. Kinda. Just a little.

And that’s every question, done entirely by RNG. I survived with one papercut, one bruised foot, and a newfound hatred for my shelving choices. I must change things up. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this look into what’s hiding on my shelves again. See you all tomorrow!

Until next time!
