I’ve been meaning to take part in the Reading Rush for years. This year, I finally have the chance.
The Reading Rush is a reading marathon on July 20-26. Seven days of challenges, reading, and coming together in a bookish way. It mostly takes place on Youtube, there is also a forum, and a presence on other social media websites.
I decided to do a book per challenge, because I have no self control. I have them listed below, along with my choices and why I picked them.
- Read a book with a cover that matches the color of our birth stone: My birthstone is citrine or topaz. My problem is, I don’t have any books that I haven’t already read that have that color on the cover. So, I’m cheating a bit and reading Redemption Prep by Samuel Miller. The cover is a coal black cover, but it features a neon yellow color for decoration. I’m counting it.
- Read a book that starts with the word “The”: This was absolutely easy. The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth. It’s a complementary lesbian YA novel, and I have had to physically hold myself back from reading it until next week. I absolutely cannot wait.
- Read a book that inspired a movie you’ve already seen: I’ve actually done this before a few years ago with Nerve by Jeanne Ryan (movie is better, bite me). This time around, I’m reading the book that became one of my favorite Disney Channel Original Movies. I’m finally reading Lemonade Mouth by Mark Peter Hughes.
- Read the first book you touch: This was actually the last challenge I picked a book for. I put the titles of six novels into a choice picker online. It spat out Seasons of the Storm by Elle Cosimano, which I’m so damn happy about. Apparently this one is on the same vein of Rise of the Guardians, which is one of my all time non-Disney animated films. YAY!
- Read a book completely outside of your house: I planned on reading on my patio for this one, but there’s just too many people in my apartment complex not social distencing and wearing masks. Instead, I’m going to put on a nature movie and listen to that while I read volume 3 of Bloom into You by Nio Nakatani. This is a shojo-ai manga that I finally got around to start reading. I unfortualtely don’t have this volume yet (it’s still in the mail), but I’m excited to crack this one open.
- Read a book in a genre that you’ve always wanted to read more of: Oh, so I’ve tried to read horror, but I’m also a coward and I’ve never liked it. I also wasn’t a fan of Rory Power’s debut novel. So, I’ve decided to reading her next novel Burn Our Bodies Down because I hate myself.
- Read a book that takes place on a different continent than where you live: I live in North America. Since I’m on a manga and light novel kick, I’m planning on reading the first volume of Sword Art Online Progressive by Reki Kawahara. Now, I have the first volume both as a manga and a light novel. Depending on how the week is going will dictate which version I read. I’ve read all the light novels of the main series (which means I’m golden for Alicization).
In lieu of vlogging daily on Youtube, I’ll be posting daily with what challenge I’m on, how I rate the books I finish, ect. The format will probably adapt and change as the week goes on.
